Big COLD, Medium Snow

Summary

A very cold secondary trough will follow the snow we saw on Sunday with more snow and even colder temperatures. A quieter pattern will close out October and begin November. Hoping for changes back to active weather in the second week of November.

Short Term Forecast

Sorry for not updating this weekend.  It was a good friend's wedding and I was very busy with Best Man tasks.  Congratulations to Andy and Shannon on their special day!

It's VERY cold out there this morning!  Temperatures are even breaking records.  SLC Airport dropped down to 21F this morning, which breaks the old record of 23.  It's in the single digits to around zero in many mountain valleys. Notoriously cold Peter Sinks is, astonishingly, -33.5F this morning.  Absolutely amazing how cold it gets there!  We are also coming off a storm that overproduced this weekend.  While we only saw generally 3-6" in the mountains, that was significantly more than I expected so I'm going to call it a "win".  All this cold weather is allowing many resorts to supplement their natural snow with man-made snow this morning notice them blowing guns now at Alta and Solitude:

And a beautiful sunrise at Snowbird can't be ignored...

Today's clear skies will gradually fill in with clouds as the next system approaches the area.  If you can believe it, this next shot of cold air will be even STRONGER! We will see record-shattering cold temps for October.  We will also see more snow than with this previous system.  Snow should begin overnight tonight and continue thru much of the day on Tuesday, perhaps lingering into Tuesday night.  Here is a look at areas of Northern Utah we are expecting to see the best snow:

Highest in the Cottonwood Canyons, which is corroborated by the NAM graphical format for Upper Cottonwods:

It's showing up to 7" of new snow starting at about midnight and continuing into tomorrow afternoon.  This is the lower resolution 12km NAM, which often underdoes amounts, so we could very well see more.  Overall, I think another 3-6" for most mountains is likely with 6-12" for the Cottonwoods.  We could see banding of precip over certain areas that could allow for higher totals locally.

In summary, it's not a huge storm by any means, but it will add additional healthy totals.  Also, we will be left with VERY COLD air for several days afterward.  This would be an excellent time for resorts to make snow around the clock!

Extended Forecast

We will start to warm up late next week.  The beginning of November looks dry and warm.  At this point, I don't see much hope for any precipitation until the second week of the month.  Euro ensembles show the jet stream potentially dropping farther south again around or just after Veteran's Day (Nov 11).  We will keep an eye on this!
