Big Storm Wrapping Up, Small Storm This Weekend
Summary
Snow showers continue in the north on Thursday as the latest major storm departs the region. There will be a short break before the next storm brings snow showers back as early as Friday afternoon. Light to at times moderate snow will bring 10 - 20 cm for the northern zone through Sunday. An extended period of dry weather will commence next week and should last through the beginning of next month.
Short Term Forecast
Another major storm is wrapping up today, Thursday, with some additional snow showers expected throughout the day. As of yesterday, Portillo was reporting 33 cm and Nevados de Chillan 20 cm. Storm totals are likely much higher than that. Below are a few webcam shots from last night when it was dumping at Portillo and Valle Nevado.
Snow should taper off Thursday afternoon and give us a short break Thursday night and Friday morning. The next system moves into the northern zone Friday afternoon and will bring periods of light to moderate snow through Sunday.
The northern zone will be favored once again, with 10 - 20 cm possible by Sunday evening. Only light accumulations are expected in the central and southern zones. Below is the latest forecast for the weekend system from the European model.
Extended Forecast
Early next week a ridge builds in over central and southern South America. This will direct storms south of the resorts. Minor impacts are possible in the southern zone mid-week but this storm still looks too far south for anything noteworthy.
