Chilly and sunny in Sun Valley on New Year's Day

Summary

Be sure to bundle up as NOAA has issued a Wind Chill warning for today with temperatures starting the day around 0, and a NW wind will elevate wind-chill factors. 3" of new snow in the last 24 hours on top of fresh powder in the trees and off-trail. A high temp of 7 degrees is forecast today, 14 degrees on Sunday. More snow will hit Sun Valley on Monday/Tuesday of next week, 4-8" possible.

Update

Deep "cold smoke" powder brings out the smiles at Sun Valley (courtesy Sun Valley).

Three consecutive days of snow storms leading up to a sunny Friday *pow* day made for an amazing day of skiing/riding on New Year's Eve in Sun Valley. They also had a torchlight parade and fireworks on Dollar Mountain on Saturday night.

Just when many folks will be going back to work on Monday, winds will shift from the North to more of a Westerly flow, mountain temperatures will rise into the 20s, and there's a major series of snow storms lined up off the Pacific Coast that will hit the Central Mountains and Sun Valley Monday night/Tuesday-Saturday of next week.

The moist storm systems will be arcing into Idaho from the West and Southwest and that type of weather pattern typically favors Sun Valley, the Big Wood River Valley and the Central Mountains.

Sun Valley is forecast to get 4-8" on Monday night/Tuesday and another 3-5" Tuesday night/Wednesday. It keeps snowing through Saturday, but the amounts taper off. About 20" of snow could fall through the Monday-Saturday time frame.

7-day snow forecast map, European model shows about 10" coming to Sun Valley next week. The bulk of that snow should come Monday night-Wednesday.
