Friday Morning Storm Update...

Update

The storm has been performing as expected so far, even though some of you were having anxiety yesterday.  The 2nd wave moved through overnight as temperatures dropped.  That brought fast accumulating fluffy snow to the mountains.  Temperatures this morning are in the single digits up on the mountains and teens at lake level. Ridge top winds a little this morning with gusts 50-60 mph instead of the 100+ mph we had yesterday and last night.  The wind gusts could stay in the 50+ mph range today into tonight on the mountain tops.

Here is a look at the radar over the past 24 hours with the two waves of precip moving through.  There are still some showers hanging on this morning on the South side of the lake, while we are getting peaks of sun here on the North side.  You can also see the 3rd and final wave moving into the NW corner of the state.  That will arrive this afternoon.

radar

The ski resorts are reporting 2-3 feet of new snow in the past 24 hours.  That's exactly what we were expecting.  That brings the totals to 2-4 feet so far!  So we are on track still with the forecast.

reports

We have a break in the action this morning which was also forecast.  The third and final wave will bring more snow this afternoon and tonight, with scattered snow showers lingering through day on Saturday.  You can see it rotating towards NorCal on satellite.

The latest model runs have trended wetter with this final wave for tonight.  We have cold air in place with high snow ratios as well to boost to the snowfall.  The snow showers may hang on for a while on the South side of the lake, and may even start to fill in further North this morning.  But overall expecting lighter snowfall this morning.  Then heavier snowfall arrives later this afternoon into tonight.  Behind the wave for Saturday we should have more scattered and lighter snow showers lingering around before we completely clear out Saturday night.

The latest GFS and European model runs show up to an additional 1.5 inches of liquid near the Sierra crest over the next 36 hours.  Above 8000-9000 feet we could have 20:1 snow ratios.  I'm a little hesitant to believe we could see the high end of the forecast with the jump in the forecast this morning,  For now I would lean towards the low end.  We could see another 1-2 feet by Saturday night, bringing the storm totals to 3-5+ feet, which we have been expecting all week.

updated forecast

Behind this storm it is cold on Sunday in the 20's an then we warm Mon-Wed into the 30's on the mountains and 40's at lake level.  The forecast models have really been struggling with the next storm.  It looks like my fears of the ridge over the Southwest and the trough staying too far off the coast could come true.

trough

The storm spinning off the coast looks like it will push into the West Coast by Friday, but the latest model runs split and weaken it as it moves in, and have most of the precip hitting to our North.  We may see several inches of snow Friday-Saturday, but it doesn't look as impressive as it did a few days ago.

That trough over Alaska may setup over the Gulf of Alaska by next weekend.  That may setup an active storm track into the Pacific NW.  Hopefully the storms will be tracking far enough South through mid-month to keep the snow coming.

Stay tuned...BA
