Nice Fall Weather for the Weekend...

Update

We are on the 2nd day of a cold pattern that has high temperatures only in the 50's (40's in the higher elevations) and overnight lows in the 20's. That has Mt. Rose making snow at night and into the morning this morning as they try to open by the end of the month.

Temperatures across the entire West are well below average with snow falling in the Rockies.

There is another trough that will push through the Pacific NW this weekend but the colder air will stay to the north. Then a week ridge building in early next week.

We are expecting high temperatures to warm back into the 60's at lake level for the weekend into early next week, which is near average for this time of year. You may want to get out and enjoy the fall colors this weekend as they are forecast to peak.

Long-Range:

We have been watching Typhoon Hagibus all week as the forecast models have been showing it getting sucked up into the jet stream and possibly helping to bring a deeper trough and wetter storm for CA next Thu-Fri.

new trough

The latest GFS model runs have backed off of the idea after showing it for several days, and now keep the moisture to our north. (older run on the right)

The ensemble average still shows some moisture this far south, and so do the European model runs.

So we will be watching this all week to see if we may get some rain and snow at the end of next week. I'll update again Monday, and through the week if it looks like we will see a storm.

Long-Range models show a ridge building in over CA for the last week of October bringing the possibility of warmer and continued dry weather.

One exception is the European Control model that shows a possible trough, so we will keep an eye on that as well.

October - November Precip:

The CFSv2 has below-average precipitation for the rest of October...

...and then suggests a wet pattern in the Pacific NW for November and closer to average precipitation for northern/central CA.

P.S. We changed our app last winter and some of you didn't like the changes to the mountain comparisons. We have our own developers in house that have been working hard over the past year to bring the app all of the features you have been asking for. If you haven't checked out the app in a while I would check it out and all of the new features. A lot more coming this season!
