A Slow Warming Trend...

Summary

Mostly sunny skies expected through the week. Highs in the 50s & 60s to start and warming into the 60s & 70s by the weekend. A chance for afternoon showers by Sunday into next Monday.

Update

We saw cold and wet weather Thursday through the weekend. There was some snow accumulation even down to lake level Thursday. It is hard to get snowfall reports this time of year. The highest total I had reported to me was from Chris on Donner Summit with 6 inches on his deck.

There were likely slightly higher amounts on some of the peaks. We saw showers at times through the weekend but the snow melted between showers. The models had 5-10 inches for Mammoth but they only reported a total of 2 inches from the storm.

The SNOTEL sensors seem a little low for total precipitation. Around the Tahoe Basin, they are only recording 0.5 - 1.0 inches of total precip over the last 4 days. It seemed like more in spots with some heavy showers. The sensors also recorded a coating up to a few inches of snow.

The cold and wet weather was not so nice if you were outdoors, but it was nice to get any precip we can. But the small storm won't help much. Nevada is currently at the lowest running 12-month precipitation totals statewide on record, and CA is at the 2nd lowest.

The Week Ahead:

The low-pressure system that brought the cold and wet weather has finally moved east. We have sunny skies for Monday into Tuesday and slightly warmer. Highs into the 50s on the upper mountains and 60s for lake level. But it stays cool with another trough moving through Tuesday.

trough

We should see increased winds Monday and Tuesday afternoon. 20-30+ mph southwest wind gusts on the lake and 30-40+ mph possible on the peaks both days.

Wednesday looks calmer and we start to warm a bit more through the end of the week. Highs into the 60s to near 70 degrees at lake level. Gusty afternoon winds may return again on Thursday and then calmer again Friday.

The Weekend:

The weekend looks even warmer as high pressure begins to build off of the coast. Highs into the 60s on the mountains and 70s at lake level.

ridge

By Sunday into next Monday, a cut-off low dropping down through the Great Basin could bring a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms. We will keep an eye on that. Outside of that, it looks pretty dry between now and next Monday.

next Monday

Long-Range:

High pressure may build over the West Coast next week. That could bring warmer weather. We will update that forecast in next Monday's weekly forecast update.

I will continue to post weekly updates on Mondays throughout the summer. Be sure to be using OpenSummit for your summer mountain weather. It is especially helpful with the colder temperatures and stronger winds normally seen when hiking the higher elevations.

We have lots of new location points and map overlays including smoke maps and snow cover maps. We will be adding more through the summer!

Stay tuned...BA
