Snow on Friday and Saturday

Summary

Our early-season snowpack is still well below average, and the next storm will deliver moderate accumulations from Friday to Saturday.

Update

Welcome to the Telluride Daily Snow! I will write an updated weather and snow forecast each day from now through the end of the season.

Unfortunately, this season is starting with a much lower snowpack compared to average and compared to last season, and the ski area is not yet open. Hopefully, if the next storm comes through, Telluride will open on December 2, 2023.

Weatherwise, Wednesday and Thursday will be dry and warm-ish days with high temperatures in the 30s to low 40s. Wednesday will be mostly sunny and Thursday will be mostly cloudy with high, thin clouds filtering the sunshine.

From Thursday night to Saturday afternoon, a storm will bring snow to the mountain, and snow accumulations could be moderate, perhaps in the 4-8 inch range. I expect a few waves of light snow on Thursday night into Friday morning, and then our best chance for more intense waves of snow should be from Friday afternoon through Friday night. During this time, the wind direction from the southwest will not be favorable for a lot of snow, but there will be a lot of moisture and storm energy over the mountain, and these factors can overwhelm the less-than-favorable wind direction and help to create a decent amount of snow. On Saturday, snow showers could linger with light additional accumulations. Again, I think our snow total will be in the 4-8 inch range - we could use a lot more than this, but of course, we'll take what we can get!

The temperature forecast is looking favorable for the snow cover to stick around and for snowmaking to continue, with high temperatures in the teens during Saturday and Sunday and high temperatures in the 20s for all of next week.

The longer-range forecast shows a high chance for dry weather for all of next week, and then a chance for the next storm sometime in the December 2-7 timeframe. We need multiple significant storms to deepen our base and open a lot of terrain across the mountain, and while this will not happen by early December, with some luck, perhaps we will see multiple storms by mid-December.
