Where to find snow through Xmas week
Summary
Storms will continue to deliver the most powder to the Northwest through the weekend, then the entire western United States will be the focus for powder during the week of Christmas.
Short Term Forecast
Storms delivered the deep to the Northwest!
Eleven straight days of snow brought over 100 inches of accumulation to Whistler, in southwestern British Columbia. That much snow leads professional skiers to send the pillow lines!
Forecast for Thursday and Friday
For the end of this week, yet another strong storm will bring FEET of snow to the Northwest as well as northern Idaho and Montana. On the east coast, a storm will, unfortunately, bring rain on Thursday into Friday. Cold air on the backside of the storm should change precipitation to snow starting later on Friday evening.
Forecast for the weekend
You can begin to see the storm track over the west change this weekend.
Instead of systems hitting only the Northwest, there will be a more west-to-east trajectory to the storms, with snow falling on Saturday into Sunday across most mountains in the west-central and northern Rockies areas. On the east coast, the colder air behind Friday’s warm storm will allow snow to fall through the weekend.
Extended Forecast
Forecast for Christmas Week
If you are planning a holiday vacation in the western United States, there is a good chance that you’ll see fresh snow. For the week of December 24-28, the snow forecast looks fantastic with freshies for most mountains. The details of this outlook will change, but the big picture of ‘snowy in the west’ should hold.
Forecast into early 2019
Looking further out to the weekend after Christmas and through the first few days of 2019, the temperature outlooks shows a good chance for cooler-than-average readings over the west-central and southwestern mountains and also over New England. These are the areas that would be favored for additional snow and powder days.
Thanks for reading and look for the next forecast on Monday, December 24.
