Storms favoring the PNW and Rockies
Summary
An active pattern will continue out West from Wednesday through Saturday with heavy snow favoring the Pacific Northwest and Northern/Central Rockies. A storm in the East will bring another round of snow to parts of the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday & Friday as well. Next week, the pattern will take a break in the West with warmer/drier conditions while the East will see a colder pattern.
Short Term Forecast
5-Day Powder Finder for the West:
A series of storms will bring additional rounds of heavy snow to the West over the next 5 days. Thursday's storm will feature warmer air and rising snow levels across the Northwest, but a colder storm will follow on Friday-Saturday with lower snow levels.
Some of the deepest ski resort forecasts over the next 5 days include Stevens Pass, Grand Targhee, Brundage, Steamboat, Timberline, and Alta/Snowbird.
Forecast for Wed 1/5 – Thu 1/6:
Back-to-back storms will impact the Northwest and the Rockies during this period. Thursday's storm will involve a warm front with rising snow levels over the Cascades. A strong storm will bring moderate to heavy snow to the Upper Midwest on Wednesday with lighter snow for the Northeast heading into Thursday. Farther south, a storm will also bring snow to the Southern Appalachians on Thursday.
Forecast for Fri 1/7 – Sat 1/8:
The final series of storms in this cycle will impact the Northwest and Northern Rockies on Friday with lingering snow into Saturday as well. Colder air will also be arriving with falling snow levels over the Cascades. A storm will impact the East early on Friday with the heaviest snow expected across the Mid-Atlantic.
Forecast for Sun 1/9 – Mon 1/10:
The Western U.S. will dry out during this period while a strong storm will bring heavy snow to Alaska and Northwest BC. A warmer storm in the East will result in rain for many areas, while the Upper Midwest and Northern New England should stay all-snow. Rain in the Mid-Atlantic will then turn to snow on the backside of the storm on Sunday night/Monday.
Extended Forecast
Outlook for Tue 1/11 – Sat 1/15:
A ridge of high pressure will result in warmer and drier conditions across the Western U.S. during this time with the storm track retreating well north into Southeast Alaska & Northwest BC. A colder pattern is expected across the East with New England being the most favored region for snow.
