East and Upper Midwest in the flow

Summary

The Eastern U.S. picked up significant snowfall from the early week Nor'easter. A favorable pattern will remain in place for the rest of this week and most of next week with frequent shots of light to moderate snow across the Upper Midwest and Eastern U.S. The West will remain in a less active pattern though parts of BC will see good snow over the next 2 days with light snow for the U.S. Rockies.

Short Term Forecast

Eastern U.S. Snow Totals from early this week

A Nor'easter impacted the Eastern U.S. earlier this week with snow totals ranging from 10-30 inches from North Carolina to Maine. Notable ski resort snow totals from this storm include 30" at Swain Resort (NY), 26" at Canaan Valley (WV), 22" at Snowshoe (WV), 20" at Camelback (PA), 16" at Wisp (MD), 15" at Wolf Ridge (NC), 15" at Stratton (VT), 14" at Bretton Woods (NH), 14" at Sugarbrush (VT), and 12" at Sugarloaf (ME).

Skiers and riders were out enjoying the fresh powder during the storm at Snowshoe on Monday.

Forecast for Wed 1/19 – Thu 1/20:

A weak storm will bring flurries to the Rockies on Wednesday followed by a stronger storm on Thursday that will bring moderate to heavy snow to parts of BC, with light to moderate snow extending into Northern Idaho and NW Montana. The Washington Cascades & Southwest BC will see rain issues & high snow levels with this storm.

Two storms will impact the eastern half of North America during this period, the first of which will bring light to moderate snow throughout the Upper Midwest and Northeast on Wednesday & Thursday, and the second of which will bring a round of light to moderate snow to the Southern Appalachians on Thursday.

Forecast for Fri 1/21 – Sat 1/22:

A storm will bring light to moderate snow to much of the Rockies on Thursday night and Friday from Eastern BC to Arizona/New Mexico. A strong storm will then bring heavy snow to Alaska and far northwest BC on Saturday.

An Eastern storm on Friday has trended further east/offshore and will miss many areas, but Western North Carolina & Southwest Virginia will be on the western fringe and could pick up some more snow. A storm will also move across the Upper Midwest on Friday night & Saturday with light snow expected.

Forecast for Sun 1/23 – Mon 1/24:

A series of weaker storms will continue to bring light snow to the Upper Midwest and East on Sunday and Monday. The storm track out west will continue to favor Alaska with heavy snow. A minor disturbance could potentially slip into Northern Montana on the east side of the Continental Divide with flurries possible on Monday, but confidence is low.

Extended Forecast

Outlook for Tue 1/25 – Sat 1/29:

The pattern will continue to favor the Upper Midwest and East during this period, with the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England looking more favorable than Northern New England at this time. Below-average temperatures are expected throughout Eastern North America as well.

The West will remain in a dry pattern with the storm track located way up north in Alaska, but there are some signs the pattern could finally turn more active just beyond this period.

Thanks so much for reading! Next update on Friday (1/21).
