Saturday Update

Update

Not much new to say that wasn't said in previous days.  We remain in a dry pattern.  Northern Utah will be clipped by a system Saturday night into early Sunday.  We will see a few clouds, breezes, and an outside chance for a light snow shower.  The main impact will be to cool us down further on Sunday and Monday.  Temps in the mountains will be in the 20s, with even low valleys struggling to get out of the 30s.

Warmer weather will return mid to late next week as high pressure takes control.  We will remain dry thru next weekend.

The synoptic (large-scale) pattern begins to shift heading into Thanksgiving week.  Around November 18 or 19th, it looks like a system will push into the PNW and try to make it to Utah.  However, current guidance shows this system falling apart as it encounters high pressure with very little energy making it to Utah.  This is fairly common of systems that take on high pressure, but could open the door for stronger storms around or just after Thanksgiving holiday.  Models continue to align further on the idea of a more active pattern developing for the last week of November.  I've shown the GFS, the CFS showing higher precip anomalies.  Here is the EC height anomalies for November 25:

As you can see, the trough is centered essential right overhead.  This is great agreement in ensembles for 15 days out.  So yes, we are in a dry spell right now with no major snow likely in the next 10 days (maybe longer).  However, I'm fairly happy with the signs I'm seeing in the long term.  I'm going to content myself with some bonus Fall MTB for now.  Keep doing your snow dances and will be shredding pow in no time!
