Break In The Action
Summary
A weak system will move thru on Thursday and bring a chance for light mountain snow. Winds will increase today ahead of the system. A beautiful weekend ahead with relatively warm temps and sunny skies. Next chance for storms will arrive next week.
Short Term Forecast
So our big storm is completely wrapped up and the totals were impressive. Exactly one week ago, I did a snowpack analysis and said that while numbers were generally below normal, all we needed was one good storm to get us back to or above normal. Sure enough, we got that one good storm. Snowpack numbers over much of the "spine" of Utah are now at or above normal:
Right now, we are entering a general break in the active pattern. We do have a weak system that will affect the area today and tomorrow. Some winds today ahead of the system and clouds will increase. On Thursday, we could see a chance for a few light snow showers in the mountains, primarily in Northern Utah. Accumulation looks unlikely.
We will clear out for the weekend. Mild temperatures and sunny skies -- a perfect weekend to ski groomers and spend time with the family in the mountains!
Extended Forecast
We have to look to next week for our next good chance for accumulating snow. We could have some weak impulses early next week but accumulation looks minimal early in the week. Here is the GFS total accumulation thru next Tuesday (Jan 15):
Nothing impressive at all! However, things may start to get more active after mid-month. Both the GFS and the Euro have storms impacting Utah later next week. It's way too early for details but there is a chance these systems could pack a bit more of a punch. Here is the same GFS as shown above extended out to its full 10-day range:
Powder may make a return later next week. We will keep an eye on how this develops in the coming days!
