Snow Has Returned

Summary

Snow showers are impacting the high elevations of Utah. These off and on waves of snow will continue thru the weekend as two separate storms systems move thru. Modest snowfall accumulations are likely in the high elevations with chances for some decent powder days.

Short Term Forecast

Our storm system has performed as expected so far.  Showers pushed into southwest Utah overnight and has thus far brought snow to elevations above 7000 feet in southern Utah.  Brian Head already reporting 8" of new snow this morning!  Eagle Point reporting 4".  Farther north, in the Wasatch, we are just seeing precipitation start to fall this morning.  So while the ski resorts are not reporting snowfall as of their 5:30am reports, we should see several inches of snow accumulate above 7000ft this morning.  I would guess that conditions in the southern and central Wasatch (especially Cottonwoods) will be sneaky good today with very few people on the mountain.

You can see the snow already falling heavily at the base of Alta:

This snow should continue for several more hours.  Per the HRRR simulated radar for the day:

You can see the snow remains more persistent in southern and central Utah.  Northern Utah should get a break late this morning and this afternoon, but snow should fire up again this evening.  Several more inches possible by Friday morning.

Totals in Southern Utah should be another 8-14" for storm totals of 12-24" down there by tomorrow night.  Brian Head should have a couple days of great powder conditions!

In Northern Utah, I'd expect 6-12" for the high elevations by the end of the day Friday.  Due to the relatively warm airmass, no densities will be on the higher side.

We will have a break Friday night into Saturday, then Saturday night into Sunday the next storm system moves thru.  This storm will be fast-moving and not overly strong, but we should see more snow and perhaps another 5-10" if we are lucky.  Sunday could be a good powder day!

Extended Forecast

We clear out to start next week with warmer temps re-developing.  Then, another system will push into the region.  Both the GFS and Euro have this system impacting Utah around the 28th of March, however details on the strength of this storm are still in question.  We will continue to monitor...
