Just Keeps Snowing

Summary

Snow showers continue today. A short break Saturday and early Sunday before the next storm reaches the area Sunday night thru Tuesday.

Short Term Forecast

Snow continues to fall in the mountains of Utah.  Snowbasin picked up 6" of new snow overnight. Snowbird and Alta have also picked up 6+ inches of snow in the past 24 hours.  A heavy band of snowfall fell between 5:30-7 this morning and it looks like they added another 3" to that.  Alta is now reporting 43" of snowfall since Tuesday night!  By my math, that snow has come from 3.85" of liquid!

Snow conditions have been great. Over the past two days, I feel like I've skied all different types of snow.  Grabby wet snow, blower powder, smooth as silk graupel.... you name it! Had some of the best runs of the season yesterday in sugary graupel that was mouth-wateringly smooth.

Snow showers will continue today in an unstable NW flow.  Lake enhancement will occur south/southeast of the GSL.  I'd expect several more inches of snow for places like LCC during the day today.

We will finally clear out tonight into Saturday. Our break in the action continues into Sunday before the next storm arrives late Sunday night.  This storm should continue to bring off and on high-elevation snowfall to the area Monday and Tuesday.  Here is the latest total precip thru Wednesday of next week:

Firstly, this is mostly a Northern Utah event as you can see above.  Secondly, this system will be warmer than the storm we've just seen, so snow levels should be well above the valleys and likely above 6000 feet.  Right now, my best guess would be a moderate system with slightly denser snow.  Best powder day at this time looks to be either Tuesday or Wednesday.

Extended Forecast

Later next week into next weekend we should clear out and possibly warm-up.  Not sure if this will be a more extended break or if storms will continue to impact the region into the last 10 days of April.
