Another Weekend Storm

Summary

A storm will push into Northern Utah this weekend. Saturday powder followed by sunshine on Sunday. A generally less active pattern to start March.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday's weak system moved through and actually did a bit better than expected. Most ski resorts in Utah reporting anywhere from 2 to 5 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours. I was at Snowbasin yesterday, and while it wasn't deep, there was a nice few inches of fluff on top that made for some soft turns.

We have a break today but should see clouds increase later today as our next storm approaches. We will have a weak wave late tonight into Friday morning but this has trended even weak in the models since yesterday. I think this will mostly just be clouds but can't rule out a few snow showers in far northern Utah tonight or Friday morning.

A stronger system pushes in late Friday night into Saturday. This system isn't major, but it should produce at least modest mountain snowfall on Saturday along with ushering in some cold air. Here is the latest NDFD blend output:

You can see that snowfall is confined to mostly the northern half of the state. Areas in pink shading are mountain locations that could see 6-12" of new snow by Saturday night. A few favored areas, such as the Cottonwoods could see a bit more if NW flow enhances snow behind the front.

Saturday should be a decent storm day. Sunday should be clear with bluebird conditions and leftover powder. Not a bad weekend.

Extended Forecast

Heading into next week, we enter March, and thus, the start of meteorological springtime! We should see warming temps to start next week and mostly clear conditions. We will have a closed low off the west coast that could meander inland sometime middle or late next week and bring us a chance for showers, but confidence is very low at this time. We will monitor it.

Overall, the pattern in March looks to start out mostly on the quiet side for the first week or so, but could get more active as we head toward middle of the month.
