Utah Lift-served Skiing Has Begun

Summary

A very weak storm will bring clouds, colder temps, and a slight chance for snow to Northern Utah Tuesday night. High pressure in control through the rest of November. Still chances for change in December.

Short Term Forecast

Sorry for no post this morning -- my computer was having issues and by the time I got them sorted, it was time for dad duty.

The lift-served season is officially underway as Brighton had a surprise opening today at noon for passholders with an official opening tomorrow. Solitude also opening and Alta on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we have not been getting much help from Mother Nature and that should continue for quite a bit longer. We have a weak system that will move into the area Tuesday night. Main impact will be clouds increasing on Tuesday with colder temps for Wednesday. However, we can't rule out a few stray snow showers in Northern Utah mountains, although accumulation should be minimal.

High pressure takes control for Turkey Day and continues through the weekend and well into next week as we close out November.

Extended Forecast

We are still looking at December for our chance for change. The good news is that models still generally agree on a pattern change. The bad news is that it may take a bit longer than we'd like. Often, patterns take longer than models originally think to change. Ridges of high pressure can be stubborn. Still, GEFS ensemble members still showing more active weather after the start of December. I added the orange line to indicate the start of December, everything to the right of it is 24-hr precip for SLC:

Most ensemble members have at least some modest storms impacting the region. A few ensembles show strong storms. What we really want to see is for this active weather to continue to shift toward the center, and ultimately the left of this graphic. I will continue to post this daily and we will hopefully see that move close to the left and thus into a period of higher confidence.
