Heavy Snow This Afternoon/Evening

Summary

Snow showers overnight brought good accumulation to some areas. The next, stronger system moves in this afternoon with heavy snow into tonight. Snow showers continue Friday before we clear out for the weekend.

Short Term Forecast

Yesterday evening we saw snow re-develop in Northern Utah. Snow continued in our weaker initial wave and focused the heaviest snowfall north of SLC. Snowbasin and Powder Mountain saw the biggest totals since yesterday with 12" and 15" reported respectively at these mountains. Here is Snowbasin snow stake showing some 13":

This is great news as it felt like PowMow and Snowbasin were on the lower end of the totals earlier this week. Beaver Mountain is reporting 9" of new snow. In the Central Wasatch (Cottonwoods/PC), we see amounts in the 5-10" range. Southern Utah also seeing fresh snow with 6" reported at Eagle Point.

Snow showers are continuing today, especially north of I-80. We should see snow continue today in areas favored in SW flow such as DV and perhaps Brighton. Then, this afternoon, the front will approach the area and snow will increase in intensity in Northern Utah after approximately 3pm. Heaviest snow along the Wasatch and Wasatch Front will be 4pm through the evening hours. Mountain snowfall will be heavy through around midnight before we see snow become more showery in the morning hours.

We can see the latest NAM for the Upper Cottonwoods did well with the amounts this morning, and shows another 17" or so tonight:

On Friday, the flow will switch to NW slowly, as it does this, we could see snow continue or even increase in NW favored locations such as LCC. Would not be surprised to see additional accumulation on Friday with even lake enhancement possible. Overall, additional snow totals in the Wasatch of 1-2 FEET seems likely by tomorrow morning. This snow will be low density due to the cold air in place.

Southern Utah will also see good snowfall tonight with 1-2 FEET also likely in the high elevations at Eagle Point and Brian Head.

We will clear out Saturday morning with warming temps and mostly sunny skies for the rest of the weekend into early next week.

Extended Forecast

Our next chance for snow looks like it will be middle of next week (Wed/Thurs). At this point, it looks like the storm will mostly impact Northern Utah and it may not be a notable event. Models are also showing a potentially more significant trough for next weekend (Jan 8/9). Our longest range models then show that a high pressure ridge could build in for the the middle of January and give us a more extended break.
