Storm Day

Summary

Our storm is moving through on Wednesday morning with snow falling through the day before clearing for tonight. Mostly sunny and a bit milder Thursday through the weekend. Storms return for next week.

Short Term Forecast

The storm is moving through. As of 7 AM the main band is overhead in the central Wasatch (including the PC/Cottonwoods area) with heavy snow falling above 7000 feet.

Snow levels have been high, up to 8000 feet, but are now falling and should fall below 6000 feet today. So far accumulations have been light, largely due to the density of the snow from yesterday afternoon through now. Alta-Collins as of 6AM had only 5" of new snow but had 0.72" of liquid. Dense. Reports from the upper mountains of Northern Utah suggest 3-7" of snow so far.

Heavy snow will fall this morning through about noon before it starts to taper off. Highest amounts should now be in areas favored by NW flow like LCC. I still think the 10-20" forecast is good, but many areas may be on the lower end of that. Like I wrote about yesterday, these dense storms never seem to do as well (at least in terms of inches of snow) as we expect.

We should turn showery this afternoon and mostly dry out by tonight. Thursday through Saturday looks mostly sunny and somewhat mild. A nice break from the storms. The break may continue into Sunday, but we could see clouds increase as the next storm approaches.

Extended Forecast

All signs continue to point to next week being active. The first chance for snow should be Monday, but it appears to start off light. Then, stronger waves for late Tuesday into Wednesday of next week. Plenty of variability in the models in terms of details, but it does look to be a somewhat cooler system. The GEFS mean precip shows quite the increase next week with 1.5-2.5" of liquid possible.

There is certainly potential for additional good accumulations next week. We will continue to watch it as we approach the weekend.
