Little Bit Today, Much More Tomorrow

A weak initial wave is bringing light accumulations to the mountains of northern Utah today. A stronger system brings snow and cold temperatures on Friday. General trend toward dry weather late in the weekend and next week.

Short Term Forecast

We have a weak system moving through right now. Off and on snow showers today in the mountains of northern Utah. Alta has picked up an inch so far. Looks somewhat graupely.

Powder Mountain also with 2-3" as they open later today at Sundown with larger opening tomorrow:

Today's storm is generally going to bring 1-3" of snow. You can see the HRRR forecasted radar showing intermittent showers in northern mountains:

Therefore, areas in far northern Utah are expected to have a better chance fo a few inches today.

The better system arrives later tonight and continues through the day on Friday. This system has lots of cold air. Temps tomorrow morning in the upper elevations will be cold:

This means low to mid-teens on the mountain. Bundle up. It also means good quality snow. Latest NBM shows the following liquid amounts through Saturday morning:

Here is the total snow from this output:

That matches fairly closely with what our OpenSnow algorithm is putting out:

I think this algorithm may be under-forecasting totals by just a bit in LCC. This is a very favorable NW flow tomorrow and wouldn't be surprised to see 12-18" of snow in the Cottonwoods. Elsewhere, generally 7-14" of snow through Saturday morning in northern Utah mountains.

It is the perfect setup for Friday powder and Saturday leftovers/terrain openings. Enjoy!

We should clear out on Saturday. Another wave for Sunday has trended weaker and farther north. We may just see some clouds and little to no additional snowfall. High pressure takes control next week.

Extended Forecast

It generally looks dry next week. High pressure is going to dominate the west so most of us are going to be dry. Right now, the first and best chance for a change will come around December 18th. We will have to watch this as details this far out are scant.

Of the Black Sea, a film by local skier, Giray Dadali, premiers today at noon. You can watch it this afternoon here. I watched the trailer and this film looks like a can't-miss personal and ski journey. I'll make sure to drop the full episode 1 in here tomorrow.
