Snow showers on Tuesday night at Winter Park

Summary

Tuesday will be dry and warm. Then from Wednesday through early next week, we will flip back to colder weather with chances for snow each day.

Short Term Forecast

Monday was warm and dry, and today on Tuesday we’ll see our final day of springlike weather with high temperatures rising into the upper 30s to low 40s.

From Tuesday night through Friday, high temperatures will drop back down into the 20s and we will see chances for snow as multiple rounds of snow showers track from the southwest to the northeast across Colorado. A wind direction from the southwest is not favorable for big snow totals, but each round of snow showers could drop a coating to a few inches of snow. These showers are most likely on Tuesday night, Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday afternoon into Thursday night.

From Friday night through Saturday night, a powerful storm will track through southeastern Colorado and a strong wind from the east will bring a lot of snow to areas east of the continental divide. Luckily, Winter Park is located very close to the divide (just on the west side) and a lot of this eastern snow should spill over the divide. So between Friday night and Saturday night into Sunday, we could see 1-2 FEET of snow with fun powder on both Saturday and Sunday morning. Keep in mind that big storms like this can create difficult or impossible travel conditions and if the snowfall arrives as forecast, there is a chance that Berthoud Pass could close for a time due to accidents, low visibility, and/or avalanche risk.

From later Sunday through Monday, as the strong storm moves away to the east, the counter-clockwise rotation around the storm means that our wind direction will change to blow from the west and northwest and these wind directions are more classic directions that can keep the snow going. So, more powder will be possible from Sunday through Monday.

Extended Forecast

The beginning and middle of next week, March 15-17, should be chilly with a good chance for snow and potential powder thanks to a storm that should track into Colorado from the northwest.

After March 17, I have no idea what the weather will be and we’ll tackle the longer-range forecast once we get through the stormy seven-day period coming up.

Thanks for reading and check back each morning for daily updates!
