Surprise 6" and more on the way

Summary

Wednesday offered just light snow showers, then on Wednesday night, we saw a surprise 6 inches of fluffy accumulation at mid-mountain. Our next round of snow will be on Thursday night.

Update

The first part of the storm on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was lackluster, resulting in just a coating to an inch of snow.

On Wednesday, we saw little accumulation with cool temperatures in the teens and some clouds hanging around.

On Wednesday night, the magic happened with an unexpected 6 inches of fluffy snow accumulating on the mid-mountain snow stake. Some models showed a little bit of accumulation possible on Wednesday night, but no models (that I could see) showed the chance for 6 inches. The reason for the surprise was that some storm energy and the jet stream were just a little stronger and tracked just a little closer than most models predicted. A few miles made all the difference.

Now on Thursday, we'll see dry weather for much of the day with continued cloudy skies and chilly temperatures in the teens which are good for snowmaking.

On Thursday night, the next round of storm energy plus the jet stream will track overhead and this should result in another 3-6+ inches of snow between Thursday at 3 pm to Friday morning at sunrise. Most models show this energy tracking right overhead, so even if the models are wrong and the storm moves a little north or south, we should still be ok and see snow.

From Friday through the weekend and into early next week, we'll see partly-to-mostly cloudy skies, mostly dry weather with a few snow showers now and again, and slowly warming temperatures that top out in the 30s over the weekend and touch the 40s early next week.

Our next chance for snow will be sometime between November 17-19. Opening day is scheduled for November 17.
