Posting Schedule
I am traveling to ski with my family through February 2. In an attempt to spend as much time with them (and get some sleep, too!), my posts will be shorter and more to the point than normal. And I will write on a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule unless it makes sense to adjust this based on the timing of upcoming storms. Finally, at the bottom of each post, I will always mention when to expect the next post. Thanks for your understanding and your support!
Friday
The view from the base on Friday just before dawn:
Friday will be dry for most of the day with increasing clouds and a high temperature in the teens.
Friday Night to Sunday Morning
A storm will bring snow to far northern Colorado from Friday night through Sunday morning.
Most forecast models show that a narrow band of intense snow will form near or just north of Winter Park and that the mountain could receive 5-8 inches of snow from Friday night through Sunday morning.
It'll be a game of a few miles one way or the other. If the band of snow sags farther to the south, more snow will fall, and if the band of snow stays to the north, less snow will fall. If the snow arrives as we expect, then there should be powder on Saturday morning with more snow throughout the day.
The high temperature on Saturday will be in the teens and the high on Sunday will be a little warmer, likely around 20°F.
Longer Range
Next week will likely be dry with daily high temperatures in the 20s. There is a chance that a storm to the south will track close enough to Colorado to deliver some flakes later in the week. Right now, this is a low chance, but it's still worth watching.
Then starting around the weekend of February 1-2, most longer-range forecast models show that a stormy weather pattern will develop over the western U.S. and this may include multiple storms for us here in Colorado. It's too soon to get super excited about this, but the model trend is in the correct (stormy) direction, so I hope that the forecast holds and that there will be a lot of snowflakes coming our way in early February.
