Waterville Valley New Lift: New Hampshire’s Waterville Valley Resort celebrated the opening ceremony for its Green Peak Triple Chair on Saturday, Feb. 11. New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu officiated the ceremony. Sununu served as the resort’s CEO prior to his gubernatorial term. The new Green Peak Chair accesses six new trails totaling 30 skiable acres. The Green Peak expansion will eventually include ten new trails across 45 acres.

Loveland Valentine’s Tradition: Loveland Ski Area held its 26th Annual Mountaintop Matrimony event on Valentine’s Day. The Colorado ski area welcomed 70 couples to tie the knot or renew their vows in a mass wedding at the mid-mountain Ptarmigan Roost Cabin. Of the 70 couples, 14 were newly married.

Speed Dating at Wintergreen: Loveland may have a few new couples for next year if the “Powder of Love” event at Wintergreen Resort proves successful. During the afternoon of Valentine’s Day, the Virginia resort set up a special speed-dating lift line for singles on the Blue Ridge Express. Participants were given cards with conversation starters.

Mammoth to July 4: Given the bountiful snowfall this season in the Sierras, Mammoth Mountain went ahead and announced that it would stay open at least through July 4. The late closing date for the California resort is far from unprecedented, but the certainty to make the decision by mid-February is unusual. Mammoth’s snowpack has built up to more than twice its usual depth at this point in the season.

Outdoor Retailer Move: Organizers of the summer and winter Outdoor Retailer trade shows have decided to move the annual events out of Salt Lake City. They are upset with the state of Utah’s handling of issues related to public lands such as Bears Ears National Monument in southern Utah.

Alpine World Ski Championships: The 2017 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships continued in St. Moritz, Switzerland. American Mikaela Shiffrin won a silver medal in the women’s giant slalom. In the women’s downhill, Lindsey Vonn captured bronze to lead four Americans in the top 15.

Tignes Avalanche: An off-piste avalanche killed four French snowboarders at Tignes in the French Alps on Monday, Feb. 13. The victims included three family members along with an instructor. According to reports, the members of the group were on foot carrying their snowboards when the avalanche apparently was triggered higher up on the slope.
