Snow started to fall around or just after noon on Sunday and came down rather heavily at times during the afternoon and early evening in the northern mountains.
Based on snow stake cameras and sensors, these are the highest accumulations that I could find as of 10pm on Sunday night:
Breckenridge 8”
Copper 7”
Loveland 5”
Vail 3-4”
Keystone 3”
Steamboat 2-3”
Aspen 2”
Most models show that we’ll see a downturn in the snow for a time on Sunday night, with snow intensifying again toward early Monday morning. So we might see an additional 1-3 inches fall by the time of the 5am Monday snow reports. These snow totals, in the 3-6 inch range, and up to 10 inches, should create soft conditions and great turns on groomers and north-facing slopes on Monday morning, though remember that we’ve had a week of warm weather which has created crusts on south-facing slopes, and you will feel these crusts if you choose to ski on south-facing terrain as 4-10 inches usually is not enough to bury the crunch.
On Monday and Monday night, look for continued snow showers in the northern mountains, varying from flurries to heavy snow showers. Another few inches is possible during the day, with a couple inches falling between closing time Monday through Monday at midnight. This should setup Tuesday morning for continued soft turns, and with fewer people on the hill since it’s not a holiday, this could be a fun morning as well.

I hope you have a great rest of your Sunday night and early Monday morning! My next update will be around 8-9am on Monday.

PS - Join me in Denver on Wednesday, February 17th. I’ll be giving a talk at the Arc’teryx Store (Cherry Creek area) and will cover the forecast for the rest of the winter, how to predict powder in each mountain range around Colorado, and the best websites and apps to help you track the weather. I might event throw in a few slides about how to find snow in Japan as I will just have returned from the trip:-) AND … for a small donation you’ll be able to drink beer from Avery Brewing! All of the donations will go to a charity founded in Colorado called SOS Outreach. PLUS … Arc’teryx will be giving away a free jacket. A pretty good way to spend a Wednesday night, eh?
