Little bit Saturday night, then looking ahead one week

Summary

Colorado’s northern mountains will see a coating to two inches of snow on Saturday night, then the first week of 2018 should be dry. There will be a better chance for snow starting around January 6th and continuing through the second week of January.

Short Term Forecast

The radar on Saturday morning looks similar to the radar on Friday morning – the snow is to our north.

Following a dry day on Saturday, the tail end of this northern storm will graze northern Colorado, and the mountains near and north of Aspen should see some flakes between Saturday sunset and Sunday sunrise.

The highest snowfall amounts of 2-4 inches should occur from Rocky Mountain National Park north to Cameron Pass and west to the Never Summer range. Other mountains should see a coating to 2 inches.

The NCAR high-resolution ensemble forecast shows the following for Copper Mountain – zero to 3 inches with an average of 1 inch. This forecast is almost sure to verify:-)

Extended Forecast

Let’s look at the 10-day snow forecast in three chunks.

The first chunk shows the forecast for the weekend of December 30-31. Just a bit of snow for northern Colorado with the deepest snow well to our north.

The second chunk shows the forecast for Monday to Friday, January 1-5. Not much happening in the western US and Canada.

The third chunk shows the forecast for Saturday to Monday, January 6-8. Don’t pay attention to the details of the snow forecast, as this will change, just notice that there is action in the west.

So, aside from the snow this Saturday night, expect dry weather for about a week, and a better chance for snow starting on or just after January 6th and continuing through the second week of January.
