One More Bite of Pow…or 8?

Summary

A strong storm that has been spinning along the Pacific Northwest Coast over the weekend will finally make a move southward into California today. As it does, one more wave of energy will bring a fresh dusting of snow to the southern half of Idaho. After that, we will get a new weather regime from Canada, spreading colder and drier air into the western U.S. for the next week to 10 days. Weather conditions will be predictably stable and provide for some mellow groomer skiing and riding.

Short Term Forecast

Today and Tonight

Tamarack’s snow report this morning said it best, “3 is the new 6”. They scored bonus inches in the past 24 hours with the last burst of snow and I’m not hearing any complaints about that one, except for the strong winds that accompanied the snow yesterday. I still think today and tomorrow will be the best days to carve out fresh turns before the snow packs down too much. Sun Valley chalked up 4 inches of new snow in the past 24 hours, with 2 inches or so at Bogus Basin, where it was also uber windy yesterday afternoon.

Here's how the radar looks this morning.  Green and yellow colors indicate highest returns and more precipitation.

This afternoon a cold front will usher in northwest winds, but not quite as strong as yesterday’s. This flip in the flow will bring in cooler air. Although it will be drier, there’s still a chance for some light and fluffy snow, with a few more inches of snow today. This morning’s computer model has slowed down the storm, favoring more snow for Bogus Basin today, up to 8 inches. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for them. It probably won’t reach as far north for Tamarack and Brundage since the overall storm is moving southward. This storm will really pack a punch for our neighbors at Pomerelle Resort and Grand Targhee where Pacific moisture is abundant. They will easily get a couple feet of snow.

Check out the forecast snow amounts (in lavender colors – see Bogus Basin 5-10”? )

Here’s how the University of Utah depicts the down-scaled ensemble forecast for the Sawtooth Mountains Galena Summit area with a couple of separate storms totaling 4 inches of new snow before leveling off to nothing.

Extended Forecast

Tuesday through Thursday

There’s a chance we could see a couple weak waves moving through Tuesday night and Wednesday, and a glancing blow on Thursday with another weak storm, but I wouldn’t bank on much at this point.  A few extra bites of light snow will be welcome.

Friday January 27 through Saturday February 4

After digging out from several feet of ice-coated snow, a change to bluebird skiing isn’t a bad option for the next 10 days.  By then we’ll be ready for more action, so take advantage of great temperatures in the 20s, and light winds.

Thanks for reading, Friends.

Announcements

Due to safety concerns, all back country gates at Bogus Basin remain closed until further notice. Stiff winds on the new snow have created considerable avalanche danger. Check the latest updates before heading out.
