The Powder Bullseye is on Idaho Next Week

Summary

We are in for a warm and windy stretch today and early Thursday as we anticipate the first wave of new snow. Friday will be a powder day for sure, with modest amounts of precipitation. By Sunday the bullseye is over Idaho for the long haul. Expect several waves of storms embedded within a moist, Westerly flow. We will get snow every few days in this pattern through next week and well-beyond.

Short Term Forecast

Today through Saturday, January 20

Snow levels will be the thorn in our side through the first half of tomorrow's pending storm. We will start out in the warm sector of this wave before a cold front moves through late Thursday night and Friday. In fact, it's going to be warm and windy. We could even break some high-temperature records tomorrow.

Here's how it looks from space on this morning's GOES-West Satellite loop.

The Blue and Orange colors are enhanced areas of highest water vapor amounts, while the Dark Orange and Black spiral off the coast is the center of this low-pressure system.

Expect rain as high as 7,000 feet or even higher for much of tomorrow before the cold air kicks in. After that, the snow will start piling up. Here's how much according to the GFS computer model;

Blue colors are up to 6 inches (Hint, #Bogus Basin), with up to 15 inches in Pink. Notice that this snowfall forecast through Saturday is a little lower than previous due to the delayed timing and warmer snow levels to start out. No worries, though because next week is sure to please.

Extended Forecast

Sunday, January 21 through Friday, January 26

Mother Nature is setting her sights on us for next week in a big way. Below is the CPC 6 to 10-day Outlook updated yesterday afternoon. See the bullseye of above normal precipitation probability in the image on the left? What this means for us is fresh turns every few days beginning Sunday.

Here's a closer look at individual resorts snow forecasts through next Friday, courtesy of the Euro model. They represent the range of snow that is expected at the mountain ski resorts through the end of next week. Even Bogus Basin will get over a foot of snow in the next 7 days, which is great because they've been missed the past few storms.

The different colored bars in Green and Blue represent the ensemble member solutions and the official forecast, respectively. Notice the 3 separate waves?  And there's more to come as we keep climbing in the long-range.

Trends indicate that we will continue to see cold and snowy weather persisting into February. I'm thinking this will be much like last winter, compressed into a shorter time period.

Thanks for Reading.  Pack up your gear for this weekend and next week. It's gonna be good.
