Southwest Montana looking good into Tuesday

Summary

Sunday night into early next week will see slightly below average temperatures with a series of small disturbances affecting mostly southwestern Montana with snow totals up to 8” around Big Sky by Tuesday morning. West of the Divide, intermittent snow showers will bring a few inches to Whitefish and Lookout by Monday night – with perhaps 4” at Lost Trail Pass. After Tuesday it still looks to be dry through the end of the week.

Short Term Forecast

West of the Divide: The large trough of low-pressure just off the Pacific Northwest coast will project the next wave of moisture into the mountains West of the Divide on Sunday into Monday.  East of the Divide: Sunday will see increasingly cloudy skies with a few snow showers by nightfall. Mountain high temperatures will be colder, in the upper teens to low 20’s. Sunday night into Monday will see a very good chance of a warm front moving from the south clashing with cold Canadian air from the north – but - mainly south of I-90 around Big Sky and south with constant light snow that will possibly drop 2-4” Monday and another 2-4” Monday night.

Extended Forecast

West of the Divide: A northerly flow will set up with perhaps a few snow-showers possible Monday night into Tuesday. After Tuesday building high-pressure with a few imbedded disturbances will mix snow showers and sunny spells thru the end of the week with continued cooler temps.

East of the Divide: Continued unsettled and colder than average temps will prevail on Tuesday before another high-pressure ridge builds in Tuesday night into Thursday. This will be a dirty high-pressure system with a few weak disturbances creating mostly cloudy conditions with scattered snow showers into Friday – but continued cold with highs in the low to mid teens.
