Let It Snow!

Summary

Over the weekend, some mountains in New England gained anywhere from 3-17” of new snow! Snow will continue throughout the day today for most of the region. A second, but weak cold system will move through Wednesday with unsettled conditions lingering until the end of the week. Clearing, colder conditions will follow into the weekend ahead of our next system sometime early next week.

Short Term Forecast

Reports out of Sugarbush, VT and Loon Mountain, NH show accumulations of new snow over the weekend with the summit of Sugarbush receiving 17” and Loon Mountain upward of 4”+!

Area radar shows snow falling across much of New England. This snow will persist until sometime this afternoon with upslope showers continuing into Wednesday morning.

Intellicast

Temperatures are in the 20s across the board this morning, making for soft, lighter snow. As the day progresses, temperatures will increase slightly but conditions should still be favorable for some of the best snow we’ve seen this season.

Tuesday will bring brief clearing before our next system on Wednesday. This system will be considerably weaker than the current storm, but high elevations could see 2-3” of new snow. For mountains that miss out of the fresh stuff, plenty of cold air will be in place to fire up the guns and build those bases.

Extended Forecast

On Wednesday, the Northeast will be in an unsettled pattern with low pressure to the south and northwest. Both the NAM and GFS models are forecasting snow showers Wednesday morning into Wednesday night.

Resorts in Vermont and northern New Hampshire are expected to benefit the most from this event.

With comfortable temperatures in the mid 30s (wind chill in the 20s) and fresh powder, Wednesday is looking like a solid day at the mountains that’ve been getting hit with snow in the last week.

By Thursday, the system to the south will move offshore and the aforementioned low pressure system to the northwest will make its presence felt in the Northeast. A cold front associated with this system is expected to produce more snow showers in eastern New York, northern Vermont/New Hampshire, western Maine, and western MA.

As this cold front passes, north/northwesterly flow over northern Vermont/New Hampshire will create the potential for intermittent periods of upslope snow showers similar to the ones that produced 4 inches of snow over at Loon this past Saturday night.

The potential for these showers will continue Thursday night through Saturday morning, setting up Northeast ski resorts for a better weekend than last (which social media reported as very good!).

If you’re planning a trip to the mountain this weekend, bundle up. Temperatures at the base of the resorts with the best conditions (north of central Vermont/New Hampshire and western Maine) are expected to be in the teens Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures at the peaks may be up to 10 degrees colder, not to mention the wind chill factor. Stay warm!

To summarize, there’s potential for snow every day this week through Saturday morning. Here’s what the GFS is forecasting for accumulated snow over the next 7 days:

Additionally, temperatures will be cold enough for snowmakers to blow snow day and night all week. Although it’s still early, this season is shaping up to be far better than last, as it seems like the potential for snow in this blog has been mentioned more than all of last year combined

That's all for today. Check back tomorrow for updates.
