Quiet weekend with a possible white Christmas

While areas got a quick inch of snow today, things should quiet down for the weekend before the snow returns for most of next week as a trough moves across the Upper Midwest.

Friday through Sunday should be mostly uneventful for the Upper Midwest with cloudy skies and temperatures slightly above normal as another inversion sets up across the region. There is a slight chance that some areas could see snow flurries similar to today as additional moisture pushes through the area on Saturday, but there will be very little in the way of accumulation.

Things really start to get exciting for next week as a large trough moves across the Upper Midwest slowly throughout the entire week. This means many areas could see snowfall every day from Sunday night until Christmas on Thursday. However, the biggest challenge looking at the forecast right now is the precipitation type for central Minnesota and Wisconsin as the spread of colder air southward has been back and forth between model runs. Right now it looks like most northern areas will see an inch or two each day, while areas with mixed precip will only get snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. However, for now will have to wait to see what the models agree on over the weekend before figuring out actual snow totals.

Large area of low pressure across the Midwest for next week

Regardless, it looks like we will be having a white Christmas across the Upper Midwest (at least for now).
