Finally some winter in the forecast!

Summary

After an autumn that just didn’t want to end, there is finally some snow in the forecast for next weekend!

Short Term Forecast

First, hello again and sorry for the late start this season! As the technical founder of the company I got tied up with getting the site and apps ready for the season, and with no snow in the forecast ignored posting. But I am back for the season and will most likely be updating on Mondays and Thursdays this year!

The clouds covering most of the Upper Midwest this morning and slowly moving east are with a cold front proceeding a trough is moving through the area. While it’s bringing clouds and cooler temperatures, it has very little moisture associated with it. Only northern Minnesota and Wisconsin should see any chance of precip with this storm today, tomorrow, and Thursday, and most if not all of it will fall as rain.

Otherwise, the work week looks rather quiet, with temperatures hovering still in the mid-50s down south and mid-40s further north during the daylight hours.

Extended Forecast

Next weekend is finally getting me cautiously excited. Right now the models are disagreeing on timing and precip type (because of temperatures in various parts of the low pressure system), but all of them agree that this will be the first big storm system we will see this year.

As with many of the storms we saw last year, it will be the story of precipitation banding in who gets snow and who gets rain, and right now we are just too far out in the forecast to pin down exactly where that line will fall yet. Regardless of positioning, it looks like those that end up in the cold sector of this storm could see 6+” of snow, so it should at least help it start feeling like mid-November… somewhere!

This storm will also finally usher in below freezing temperatures for across the Upper Midwest, so most locations will be able to fire up their snow guns and try to get the season started. But for now, it’s a wait and see where the storm lines up for later this week.

Just happy to say, snow is finally in the forecast!
