Colder week, but not much snow

Summary

Split storm affects the region on Tuesday, but getting less impressive by the model run. Then temperature hang on the colder side until Friday where southern Minnesota could see record highs.

Short Term Forecast

Interesting forecast for the next 72 hours with two different lows moving through around the same time, one to the north and one to the south. However, since we talked about this last week, every single model run has both weakened the lows, and kept the southerly low move over Iowa than southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. This means, that baring any jump back northward or any forecasted restrengthening, that most places on and south of I-94 will not see any more than a dusting of snow.

Further north, the northerly low still brings decent accumulations to northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Overnight tonight and tomorrow, most places near Lake Superior should see 1-3” with some leftover energy and moisture from yesterday’s clipper. As for Tuesday’s low, totals have become less impressive than earlier model runs this weekend, and it looks like most places should only see another 2-5” during the day on Tuesday on top of the snow they see overnight tonight and Monday.

Model snowfall through Tuesday night.

After the snow on Tuesday, temperature across the area drop below normal for Wednesday with highs struggling to get above zero further north and only into the teens further south. Thursday should be only 5-10 degrees warmer than Wednesday. However, with the sun out and winds on the lighter side, it won’t feel too bad for early February.

Extended Forecast

The long term forecast with the exception of Friday is very much still up in the air with both the Euro and GFS hinting at a low moving through the northern half Minnesota and Wisconsin some time over the weekend of some strength. However, the big story further south will be how warm we could get on Friday. With very little snow cover over southern Minnesota and much of central Wisconsin, there is a chance that could see highs near the 50º mark on Friday afternoon. Will make for some very sloppy conditions with what snow if left around after this very snow-free year so far.

Model high temperatures for Minnesota on Friday.

Not looking good on the snow front next week either, with a few clippers in the model brushing northern areas but no large lows in the forecast as of now. For now will have to just cross our fingers for a pattern change soon.
