Coast-to-coast snow this week, then the action shifts to the west

Summary

The final week of 2016 will bring cool air and snow from coast-to-coast, then the weather pattern will transition in early 2017 with the coldest air and deepest powder falling in the western US.

Short Term Forecast

The snow forecast map for the final week of 2016 shows that the deepest powder will accumulate in the northwest and northeast.

In the northwest, powder has been plentiful during December and additional storms this week will keep conditions soft and deep!

In the northeast, a storm should take a favorable track on Thursday into Friday so that just the right combination of moisture and cold air can work together to drop a foot of snow in New England.

Extended Forecast

During the weekend and the first full week of the new year, the weather pattern will shift so that the coldest air will settle over the western US and Canada while the northeast warms up.

This means that the most powder next week will be found over the western US, and the snowfall could be significant in some spots, especially California.

You should have some skepticism about detailed snow forecasts more than about 5 days into the future, so take the above graphic with a grain of salt and stay tuned for updates about next week’s powder potential!
