Current Storm Trending Warmer, Next Week Looking Deeper
Summary
The current storm has been bringing rain to the western Alps, and will continue to do so though the weekend. With temperatures a little warmer than previously modeled, I expect a bit less high elevation snow. Next week's storm is trending stronger with a solid snowfall possible.
Short Term Forecast
I wasn't expecting the first round of snow to be all that impressive, with main some high elevation snow in the Alps. Snow levels should lower to around 2500 m in the French, Swiss, and Italian Alps, and around 2700 m for Austria. Above 3000 m 10 - 20 cms is still possible, especially around Pitztal and Stubai Glaciers and in the Hautes-Alpes and Isere areas in the French Alps.
Latest snow forecast from the European model is below.
The higher totals are really confined to the higher elevations.
After a short break, the next storm arrives Monday night into Tuesday, starting as rain. By midday Tuesday the higher elevations of the French Alps should start to see some snow. Heavier high elevation snow should arrive Tuesday afternoon and begin to spread into the Swiss, Italian, and Austrian Alps.
A series of mid-level storms will barely though the Alps during the proceeding days, keeping the snow going through the rest of the week and weekend. Once the cold front moves through the Alps Tuesday into Tuesday night, snow levels will generally hover between 1800 - 2100 m in the French Alps, and 2100 - 2400 m in the Swiss, Italian, and Austrian Alps.
During this time, I expect 5 - 15 cms per day above the snow line, with even higher totals above 3000 m. I would not be surprised to see totals of 20 - 40 cms or more by the end of Sunday. It won't necessarily be dumping this whole time, or even much of this time, but the consistent moderate snow will result in some solid accumulations. Check out the snowfall for the Tuesday to Sunday timeframe below.
I will have post another update on next week's snow on Monday.
Extended Forecast
The beginning of November has some potential for more storms. The long-range models show the active pattern continuing through the first week of the month. Let's hope this fantasy land model data is correct.
