A Quiet Week, Storms Return Friday

Summary

Another major storm is behind us and overall the season is off to a great start. Most of this week will be dry and quiet but a stormy pattern returns on Friday.

Short Term Forecast

That was a wild storm! A large part of the  Austrian Alps saw well over 1 m of snow, while the winds kept a lot of terrain closed and did a number on the snow quality. Many mid-mountain snow depths are now at 2-3m. The snowpack isn’t nearly as deep at lower elevations, but it is still solid. The southern side of the Alps hasn’t faired as well this year, though snow depths are more uniform across all elevations.

The week will be mostly quiet, especially through Wednesday. Some snow/rain showers will be possible on Thursday and Friday from weaker storms to the north.

On Friday night, the next storm arrives. It will take a more southerly track that will favor the western French Alps initially, followed by the southern Alps of Italy and Austria.  While not a huge or long-duration storm like we just saw, it will bring solid totals and good-quality snow. This storm will last through Sunday and potentially bring 15 - 30 cms to the French Alps as well as the southern Italian/Austrian Alps. There’s still a lot of time for the details of this storm to be nailed down, but those are my early thoughts.

Here is an early look at snowfall totals for this storm.

Extended Forecast

Another storm is possible early the following week but there’s a lot of disagreement in the models on the details right now. A period of solid accumulating snow is possible though.
