Long Duration Storm Begins Today

Summary

The last storm in this latest cycle starts today (Friday) and will linger through early next week. Unlike most of the storms this season, this one will bring solid accumulations to the northern and southern sides of the Alps as well as the Pyrenees. Most areas will see a prolonged period of light snow except for a few areas.

Short Term Forecast

There haven't been too many changes to the next storm headed for the Alps and Pyrenees. A long-duration storm is on track thanks to an upper-level low that will stall over southern Italy.

The track of the storm will lead to a variety of wind directions that will benefit different parts of the Alps/Pyrenees at different times. The snow forecast remains a bit tricky given that the wind direction will depend on the location of the stalled low pressure. Small changes in its position can lead to a shorter or longer period of a certain wind direction, which could increase or decrease snow totals in the area favored by that wind direction.

The rest of the details of this storm have been previously covered, so check out the recent posts for more info on that. I will focus on updated snow totals for this extended snowy period.

These are the expected snow totals from Friday through Tuesday:

  • Northern French/Western Swiss Alps: 20 - 40 cms
  • Southern French Alps: 25 - 50 cms
  • Southwestern Italian Alps: 25 - 50 cm
  • Central/Eastern Swiss/Western Austrian Alps: 20 - 40 cms
  • Central/Eastern Austrian Alps: 15 - 30 cms
  • Eastern Italian Alps: 30 - 60 cms
  • Southern Austrian Alps: 25 - 50 cms
  • Pyrenees: 25 - 50 cms

As mentioned, for most of these regions, this storm will bring light to moderate snow over several days. The exceptions to this will be the southern French, eastern Italian, and southern Austrian Alps, which will see periods of heavy snow early in the storm Friday through Saturday. The latest snow forecast from the European model is below.

Snow showers will linger across the Alps and Pyrenees through Monday, and possibly Tuesday and Wednesday in the western Alps and Pyrenees.

Extended Forecast

After the storm wraps up in the middle of next week, we should see a break in the action. The ridge off the Scandinavian coast won't stick around long, as a deep low bringing arctic air will move from the northeast across central Europe. This will bring the coldest air of the season and have the potential to bring additional storms toward the end of the period.
