Another Deep Storm Cycle Gets Underway Today
Summary
The next long-duration storm cycle begins today, Friday, first in the Pyrenees and then the Alps this afternoon. This cycle will feature three phases, bringing impressive snow totals to the Alps and Pyrenees once again through Wednesday. A break in the active weather is expected later next week.
Short Term Forecast
The details for the next storm cycle remain on track, and those can be reviewed in yesterday's forecast here. This cycle will bring snow in three phases, with the southern Alps of Italy and the Pyrenees favored to receive the most snow.
The first phase of the storm, from Friday through Saturday, will bring heavy snow to the Pyrenees and the southern/western Alps in Italy.
Phase two brings an even greater blast of snow to these areas, especially the Italian Alps along the Switzerland border. The Pyrenees, central/southern French Alps, and the eastern side of the southern Alps in Italy will see solid totals as well.
Finally, in phase three of this cycle, the northern Alps will be favored, particularly in Austria. This won't be a huge dump but a solid refresh is expected for some areas that haven't seen a lot of snow lately.
This cycle will feature colder-than-average air temperatures, but nothing overly impressive. Snow quality will be medium dense, but will be solid for this time of year and better at upper elevations. This cycle will produce several powder days across the Alps and Pyrenees with few areas missing out on the action.
Below is a look at the total snow forecast from the European model.
Extended Forecast
The models have a ridge setting up following the next storm cycle, bringing a break in the active weather. However, some models bring another round of snow as early as Friday. Given the disagreement on the upper-level pattern later next week, confidence remains low at this time. We'll have to give the models a few more days to sort this out.
