March Madness Continues in the Alps and Pyrenees

Summary

Snow continues in the Alps and Pyrenees on Saturday as the first phase of the next storm cycle comes to an end. Phase two gets underway this (Saturday) morning in the Pyrenees and this afternoon in the southwestern Alps, bringing another period of very heavy snow. The third and final phase will bring moderate to heavy snow to the northern Alps through Thursday.

Short Term Forecast

There aren’t many changes to the forecast for the latest storm cycle bringing significant snow to the Alps and Pyrenees. Solid snow totals have stacked up in the Pyrenees and southern Alps so far, and the strongest part of this storm hasn’t arrived yet. Snow will continue through Thursday morning before we see short break for the remainder of the work week.

The next round of snow is reaching the Pyrenees this morning, and heavy snow will fall through Sunday morning. This phase of the storm will bring an additional 25 - 50 cms across much of the Pyrenees through Sunday. By Saturday evening this system will bring more heavy snow to the southwestern Alps, adding 40 - 80 + cms.

The far southern French and Italian Alps, as well as nearly all of the western Italian Alps, will see impressive snow totals through Monday. The central French Alps and eastern Italian Alps will get hit pretty hard too, as you can see below in the snow forecast map for the second phase of the storm.

The final phase of the storm will bring more snow from Monday night through Wednesday, favoring the northern Alps from France to Austria. The models have backed off on totals just a bit, but a nice refresh is still expected for the northern Alps during this time. The latest snow forecast for this final wave is shown below.

We should have at least a short break from Thursday morning through Friday evening, as a weak ridge sets up over the western Alps.

Extended Forecast

As early as Friday night, the models now show a series of weak storms tracking north of the Alps. These systems may graze the northern/western Alps as they battle a ridge over southern Spain. If this ridge shifts a bit south/west, the storm track can get closer to the Alps and bring more significant storms. At the moment, these look more like glancing blows from Friday night to Saturday and then again Sunday night to Monday. I’ll have more details next week.
