Two Storms, Second Trending Down

Summary

Over the next week, two more storms are lined up for the Alps, with solid accumulations expected. The second of these storms has trended weaker over the last twenty-four hours but will still bring more snow to the southern Alps. The pattern remains active in the long run.

Short Term Forecast

Over the last day, the models have trended weaker for the second storm, bringing less snow to the southern Alps. Overall, both storms will still produce more powder days for both sides of the range.

Storm #1 is underway and still on track to provide 15 - 30 cms from Sunday through Monday. The snow will be right side up, good density, keep things fresh to start the week. Additional snowfall from Sunday morning through Monday is shown below.

Storm #2 will get underway Monday night and is still expected to linger through most of the week. The Pyrenees should do best with this storm, with 25 - 50 cms expected. The western side of the southern Alps will see 15 - 30 cms. These numbers have come down a bit over the last few days, but this will still be a good event. Total snowfall for the second storm is shown below.

Extended Forecast

There are no breaks in sight with the next storm arriving from the west Friday night into Saturday. Another long-duration storm is possible once again favoring the southern Alps. I will have more details on the next set of storms moving forward.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
