Another Storms Starts Monday Night

Summary

The northern Alps got dumped on the last few days and now it’s the southern Alps’s time. A slow moving storm will bring moderate to at times heavy snow through the week. Additional storms are possible next weekend and beyond.

Short Term Forecast

A wide area of 10 - 25 cms has fallen in the northern Alps, and conditions are great. The next storm will Gabor the southern Alps, but additional light snow will fall in the north as well.

Without much of a break on Monday, snow moves in from the southwest. The southerly track if the storm will bring south and southeast winds for much of the storm, allowing the southern Alps in western Italy to see the deepest totals.

This storm will arrives in waves, with short breaks of light snow or even no snow at all at times. The first wave will impact the southwestern Alps from Monday night to Wednesday night, and from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon in the eastern Alps.

The next wave arrives in the west on Thursday afternoon, bringing light to moderate snow through Saturday morning. The southern Alps will see the most snow again during this time, albeit less than the previous wave.

Temperatures will be warmer overall than the previous storm in the northern Alps, but snow levels won’t climb too high, resulting in good quality snow.

Below is the latest snow forecast from the European model for the next storm.

Extended Forecast

The strong upper-level low forecasted to develop in the eastern Atlantic that we’ve been talking about for days is still in track and will bring additional systems starting next weekend. Several rounds of snow are expected through much of next week.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
