Southern Alps and Pyrenees Get Deep

Summary

For this long-duration storm, the models have trended back up on snow totals for the Pyrenees and southern Alps. Substantial accumulations are in store through the end of the week. A fast-moving follow-up storm is possible this weekend as well. The pattern remains active into the first few days of April at least.

Short Term Forecast

There haven't been too many changes to the forecast over the last twenty-four hours, but snow totals have continued to trend upward.

The deepest totals are expected in the Italian Alps along the Swiss border, where 50 - 100 cms is possible. Big totals are expected along the French and Italian border, from the southernmost part of the Alps through the Valle d'Aosta, where 30 - 60 cms is possible. In the Pyrenees, 20 - 40 cms are expected, with isolated areas of 50 + cms in the west.

Snow levels with this storm will be in the 1200 - 1500 m range, rising a bit in the latter part of the week. This storm will linger through Friday before tapering off.

Below is the latest snow forecast for this storm.

We won't see much of a break with another storm moving in on Saturday. It looks like this one will favor the mountains along the Italian/Swiss border once again, with a quick burst of heavy snow.

Extended Forecast

Thanks to the nearly stationary upper-level low off to the west, more storms will swing through the Alps during the early part of next week as well, with more snow on tap.

NEW: Snow Ratio Forecast

You can now get a good idea of the upcoming snow quality for the next storm via our new "Snow Ratio" forecast for any location in OpenSnow.

When we talk about snow quality, such as “light and fluffy” or “heavy and wet”, we are talking about the snow-to-liquid ratio. The higher the snow-to-liquid ratio, the lighter the snow quality, and vice-versa.

  1. Go to any location screen and tap the "Snow Summary" tab.
  2. Scroll down to the 5-day hourly or 10-day forecast section.
  3. View the 5-day hourly or daily "Snow Ratio" forecast for the next 10 days.

10:1 will be fun but will feel a little heavy. 15:1 will offer some faceshots and feel pretty light. 20:1 will be incredibly light, almost like skiing through nothing but air.

This new feature is currently available with the latest version of the OpenSnow iOS app installed (App Store > OpenSnow > Update) or on the OpenSnow website (OpenSnow.com). It will be available in the OpenSnow Android app soon.
