A Pattern Change Is Coming
Summary
Active weather finally returns to Western Europe including the Alps and Pyrenees. The mountains will see some snow from a storm early this week with additional storms expected beyond that.
Short Term Forecast
The action will start Monday night as the first storm drops down from the north. It will quickly cross the Alps delivering some snow on the northern side but as it closes off and slows down, the eastern side of the southwestern Alps will see a longer period of snow.
There aren’t too many changes from the last update so I’ll just post the latest snow forecast from the European model.
If the winds remain out of the southeast for a longer period of time, the Torino and Valle d'Aosta regions could see a bit more snow, as the higher-resolution WRF model shows below.
I think the northern side of the Swiss and French Alps should see generally 8 - 20 cm with totals dropping off the east. As the storm moves to the south of the Alps winds shift to the east/southeast, and a more prolonged period of snow is expected, the Italian side of the Alps is favored. Here, 15 - 30 cm are likely during this time. The farther south and west you go, and closer to the Italian border, in the Swiss Alps, the snow totals should increase a bit.
The storm has a decently cold air mass associated with it so after the cold air arrives snow levels will be generally below base elevations. The storm should be wrapped up by Tuesday night as it drifts off to the southwest.
For the rest of the week, we have a weak storm passing to the east of the Alps that could bring some showers on Wednesday. This looks like a minor event and the store may even pass too far to the east for any impacts at all.
The attention then shifts to the latter part of the week and into the weekend. With the ridge that has dominated our weather for the last several weeks finally out of the picture, we'll start seeing a more wavy jet stream with increased storm chances. The first of these looks to stay a bit too far to the east from Friday to Saturday, but the next one arriving on Sunday could have a bigger impact. There are still too many differences in the models for specifics, but starting around Sunday night we could see a series of storms with accumulating snow.
Extended Forecast
The long-range models show a series of storms that would allow the snow totals to stack up through the third week of November at least. This pattern is more likely to favor the western Alps but its too early to lock that in.
Thanks for reading the Europe Daily Snow!
Next post on Tuesday.
