Snowy South Through Sunday

Summary

The southern Alps remain the place to be this week as a persistent moist southerly flow will bring several more rounds of snow through the weekend. There aren't any especially heavy periods of snow expected during this time but the snow will keep piling up and keep improving conditions. Ridging is expected to take over central Europe early next week and hang on through the weekend.

Short Term Forecast

The forecast has not changed much over the last few days. General roughing over southwestern Europe is bringing a moist southerly flow into the Alps, which is bringing consistent light to moderate snow in the southern Alps. Since the forecast remains on track, I will just point out a couple of things in today's post.

First, the Thursday night to Friday wave doesn't look as strong as it did in recent model runs. I now expect more of an 8 - 20 cm event, likely heaviest in the eastern side of the southern Italian Alps. But, now the Saturday to Sunday wave looks a bit stronger, with likely another solid 8 - 20 cm burst during this time.

Snow showers will continue on Sunday and perhaps into Monday morning before tapering off across the southern Alps. The latest snow forecast for the final 4 to 5 days of this snowy pattern is shown below.

You can see the deepest totals are now in the eastern side of the southern Italian Alps and in southern Switzerland along the Swiss/Italian border. An additional .5 - 1 m is possible in these favored areas, but most of the southern Alps will see 25 - 50 cm during this time, including the southern Austrian Alps.

This model shows some heavier snow making its way into the northern side of the Austrian Alps, but this scenario is a bit uncertain. As one of the areas of low-pressure moves in from the northwest, we could see a period of northwest winds in the northern Austrian Alps that would bring a period of light to moderate snow in this region.

In addition, a convergence of southernly and northerly winds over the Austrian Alps could bring better snow to the interior as well and further enhance the snow in the northern Alps. If these features come together, we could see 20 - 40 cm in some of the northern Austrian Alps favored by northwest winds.

Extended Forecast

The models continue to show a ridge building in early next week that will keep the Alps mostly dry. The location of the ridge may allow for some rain and snow showers in the Pyrenees, but it doesn't look like anything major at this time. The ridge should start to break down later next week, with a storm possibly arriving from the northwest next weekend.

My next post will be on Thursday.
