Southern Alps Special Continues

Summary

A healthy dump is underway in the southern Alps and several more days of snow are on the way. This long duration stormy cycle is filling in this side of the range well over 1500 m, and several more pow days are expected. We should finally see a break in the action early next week.

Short Term Forecast

The southern Alps continue to see snow pile up, with a wide area seeing 10 - 30 cm in the last 24 hours. The Pyrenees have also seen their fair share of snow during this stretch. Several more days of snow are in store as an upper-level remains parked in southwest Europe. Much of the area will see light to moderate snow, but a few stronger waves will bring periods of heavy snow to the southern French and eastern Italian Alps.

On Friday, we’ll see a period of heavier snow in the eastern Alps, especially in Italy. In the evening, the emphasis shifts to the western Alps in France, where the southern side should see periods of heavy snow through Sunday.

Outside of these windows, the snow will be mostly light to moderate, but it will continue to stack through the weekend. There shouldn’t be too many changes regarding winds and snow levels, so it’s just about additional accumulations at this point.

The latest forecast through Tuesday is shown below.

Extended Forecast

We should dry out next week as a ridge builds in over Central Europe. The models have been pretty consistent with that feature. In the long-range, we could see another series of troughs over southwestern Europe, similar to the pattern we’ve had over the last week. This would mean more snow for the So than the Alps. I’ll keep an eye on it.

My next post will be on Saturday.
