Snowy Stretch Winding Down
Summary
It's been snowing continuously in the southern Alps for almost a full week now, with some areas seeing between 1 and 1.5 m of snow. The last wave of snow will move through the area Tuesday through Wednesday, but otherwise, Monday through Friday should be dry. A ridge will set up over central Europe and keep us dry through much of the week. The next storm is possible starting on Friday.
Short Term Forecast
The southern Alps have had a really nice stretch of late, with significant snow piling up over the last week. Here are the estimated snow accumulations just from the last 3 days.
Since last Sunday, the southern French Alps have seen over 1 m of snow. Up to 1.5 m fell in the southern Swiss Alps along the Italy border. Similarly, the far eastern Italian Alps, near the Slovenia border, saw over 1.5 m. Below are some seven-day totals from Switzerland.
We are starting to dry out already, and most of Monday through Friday will be dry. One final wave will move through from Tuesday through Wednesday. The deepest snow should be in the Italian Alps along the border of France and Switzerland.
The ridge moves in on Tuesday, giving us a bit of a break in the action through the end of the week.
Extended Forecast
The models continue to show low-pressure setting up over Spain, as was the case last week. We could see another extended period of mainly light to moderate snow, but with occasional heavier bursts, over the southern Alps. The models generally have this feature sticking around for about a week. This is good news for the southern Alps.
My next post will be on Monday.
