Stay at Home; weather and snowpack update

Summary

Coronavirus update: A statewide stay-at-home order is in effect statewide in Idaho. All Idaho ski areas are closed for the season. Backcountry skiing/riding is discouraged statewide to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). See more details in announcements. Weather: Idahoans are enjoying sunny skies and warm temperatures this week. High temperatures are ranging into the low 50s in the mountains statewide in the afternoons, and 60s and low 70s in the valleys. There's a cold front moving into Idaho Friday night/Saturday that will bring a slight chance of snow during that period, but snow levels will be pretty high, and not much snow accumulation is expected. Temperatures will drop Friday night/Saturday/Sunday as the cold front moves through. Medium to high winds are forecast on Saturday in particular, with gusts in the 30 mph range possible. Skies will clear by Sunday, and mostly sunshine and warmer temperatures are forecast through Friday of next week.

Short Term Forecast

Pretty quiet on the snow front. 1-2 inches of snow are forecast in the N. Idaho mountains associated with the storm front coming through Friday night/Saturday. Some high winds are expected as the front passes through.

Winter-like weather in the first half of April has been increasing snowpack levels statewide. That's good news for rafting, fishing and boating in the summer of 2020.

Announcements

Please follow Governor Little's "Stay at Home" order issued statewide on Wednesday, March 25th. The order calls on Idaho residents to stay at home for 21 days. The number of coronavirus cases in Idaho is continuing to increase.

The Idaho Community Foundation, in partnership with United Ways of Idaho and the Idaho Nonprofit Center, has created a COVID-19 Response Fund for Idaho.

Backcountry skiing at Idaho ski areas is strongly discouraged.

Local community leaders and first responders request that people not to come to their mountain communities to chase powder. If you do want to get out and enjoy the new snow, please stay close to home and be extra responsible and cautious so that you’re safe and do not cause a burden to healthcare workers.

The Payette Avalanche Center, Panhandle Avalanche Center and Sawtooth Avalanche Center have stopped all forecasting for the winter season because of the governor's stay-at-home order.
