Slight chance of snow in N. Idaho on MLK day, partly cloudy in S. Idaho

Summary

A weak disturbance pushing south into Idaho from Canada will create light snow showers and breezy conditions at N. Idaho ski areas on Monday, and cloudy to partly cloudy conditions in S. Idaho. Another system with a little more moisture will bring 2-5" of new snow Thursday and Friday in N. Idaho and light snow elsewhere in S. Idaho. High pressure aloft is still in control.

Short Term Forecast

Skiers/riders enjoy the terrain park at Brundage Mountain over the weekend. Clear to partly cloudy skies statewide over the weekend made for super fun conditions statewide.

The weak weather pattern moving into Northern Idaho ski areas today will be a little bit on the warm side at Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass on Monday, with high temperatures in the mid-30s by the afternoon, potentially causing a wintry mix of rain/snow. Schweitzer is forecast to hit a high of 30 degrees on Monday, so it should be cloudy there with a slight chance of snow and 1/2" possible. Breezy conditions associated with the storm front will bring winds in the teens and gusts into the 20s.

In Central and Southern Idaho, an air stagnation advisory is in effect throughout this week as a high pressure system aloft in the western United States continues to dominate the general weather pattern and prevent any major storm systems from penetrating the region.

A slighter stronger weather system will come in Wednesday night-Friday to Northern Idaho ski areas, bringing a potential of up to 5-6" max but more likely 2-4" to Schweitzer, Silver and Lookout by Friday.

European ensemble model shows potential snow amounts to fall by this weekend, primarily by Silver Mountain and Lookout Pass, but Schweitzer, Brundage and Tamarack should get a few inches as well.

GFS ensemble model predicts a little less snow than the European model above.

Extended Forecast

High pressure is expected to dig in deeper by this weekend and dominate our weather in Idaho through  next week. The forecast pattern generally has been favoring the eastern U.S.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Wednesday, Jan. 19.
