Enjoy the sunny weekend! Next storm Sun PM-Tues, 3-6"

Summary

Partly cloudy to sunny skies will prevail statewide this weekend with high temps in the 30s to low 40s. Spring-like conditions with great visibility - nice change of pace! Low pressure will move into the Northwest Sunday night through most of next week, bringing new snow and unstable weather. Best chance of snow short-term is Sun PM-Tuesday AM, with 3-6" forecast statewide, 10" max.

Short Term Forecast

Fresh cord at Sun Valley on a bluebird Friday. Sunny conditions will continue through Sunday night in Sun Valley with high temps in the high 20s through the weekend. Enjoy! (courtesy Sun Valley Resort).

A weekly run of 500 Mb height shows the High (orange color) moving out by Sunday and several Low pressure troughs (blue/green) moving over the top of Idaho and the Northwest through next week, bringing unstable weather and more light snow.

N. Idaho ski areas will see high temps in the mid-30s this weekend to 40-41 degrees F at Lookout. Balmy! Enjoy the sunshine! The impact of the Sunday PM-Tuesday storms in N. Idaho looks to be pretty minimal with only a few inches of new snow forecast through Tuesday morning.

In Central and Southern Idaho, high temps this weekend will range from the mid-30s in most locations to 40 at Pomerelle and 37-38 degrees at Bogus Basin. Soldier Mountain and Magic should be close to that range.

The impact of the Sunday PM-Tuesday AM storm is expected to be a bit more significant at Bogus Basin, Tamarack, Brundage, and Pebble Creek ... seeing totals in the range of 4-10" depending on how things play out. A few inches Sunday night, 2-4" Monday, and a few inches more Monday PM, for a nice pow day on Tuesday morning.

The Low troughs and short-wave storm events next week should bring cooler temps, but I'm seeing the highs staying the low to mid-30s through the middle of next week in a number of locations, so that could affect snow levels or snow-quality a bit at the lower base elevations.

Snow quantities cumulative through the end of next week via European Ensemble long-range forecast. Might only be a few inches per day, but it'll add up for some nice soft coatings on groomers for mid-week skiers/riders. Bogus, Tam, Brundage and Pebble all could get up to 10" by Tuesday EOD.

Extended Forecast

Beyond next weekend, seeing continued unstable weather conditions and a chance of 5-6" of new snow by Monday, March 27 and the last week of March. The longer-range outlook will come more into focus as it comes closer.

NRCS Snow Survey snowpack for Saturday, March 18 shows really strong percentages statewide. N. Idaho is catching up and increased over 10% in the last week after all the recent snow storms in March. Things are looking really good right now for Idaho's water supplies, river flows and lake levels for a summer of fun!
