Get ready for Spring Skiing party time this weekend!

Summary

After a blustery start to the work week, a High Pressure ridge will be building over the Pacific Coast, Idaho and the Northern Rockies in the days leading up to the second bonus weekend at Silver Mountain and Bogus Basin. Temps will be soaring into the 60s by the weekend with sunny skies and light winds. Lows will be in the 40s, so it's going to be soft snow and sunshine. Yay!

Short Term Forecast

Participants in the Leadman Triathlon at Silver Mountain last Saturday are nearing the finish line in the running leg of the ski/bike/run event (Courtesy Silver Mountain). Approximately 220 people  participated in the annual event.

Model run from Tuesday-Sunday of this week shows the ridge of High Pressure developing over Idaho, the Western U.S. and Canada. That'll send temps soaring this week to 10-15 degrees above normal to the 60s at Silver and Bogus in Idaho.

Bogus Basin has a forecast high of 60 degrees Friday, 67 Saturday and 70 on Sunday for the warmest day of the three-day bonus weekend. Silver is forecast to hit 65 on Saturday, when they reopen for its last two days of operations this ski season, and 62 on Sunday. Don't forget the sun screen!

With low temps in the 40s each night, the snow will be mushy and challenging to groom. So you may spend just about as much time partying on the deck as you do on the slopes.

You've got plenty of time to plan your spring skiing costume for the weekend. Here are a few ideas ...

The High Pressure ridge is expected to move to the east by Sunday PM, and Low Pressure trough will bring some unstable weather early next week.

OpenSnow is showing no new snow in the Idaho mountains over the next 10 days. That means when the next system rolls in early next week, any precipitation that occurs will fall as rain with the warmer temps.

Extended Forecast

Looking out into early May with the 8-14 day forecast from the NOAA Climate Prediction Center, they're predicting above-normal precip and generally normal temperatures. We'll keep an eye on that trend as we approach Bogus Basin's 100-inch party on Saturday, May 6.

Thanks for reading! My next forecast will be on Thursday, April 27.  I'll continue to make a few updates next week leading up to Bogus Basin's final day of operations on May 6.
