Sunny and cold through Thursday; storm coming this weekend

High Pressure overhead will bring sunny skies, stagnant air and chilly temps through Thursday statewide. The High will flatten and exit by mid-week and snow storms are forecast Friday PM through Sunday, with 10" to 12" possible, and more snow expected next week.

Short Term Forecast

A Low Pressure trough moves into Idaho and the Northwest by Friday, bringing unstable winter-like weather. Snow is forecast for the weekend statewide, starting on Friday night. Snow amounts are still somewhat uncertain at this point, but early predictions are for more than 10" in the mountains. Snow levels should be at valley floors.

At least the temps will remain cold this week, so Idaho's ski areas can make snow 24/7. Low temperatures will be in the teens to the low 20s statewide, so that is favorable.

High pressure and stagnant air during the week could allow inversions and fog to form in the valleys.

Snow amounts expected out of the storms Friday PM-Sunday are somewhat uncertain right now. The 7-day snow map from the European ensemble forecast is calling for up to 5"-10" of snow in Northern Idaho and Central Idaho.

Extended Forecast

Longer-range forecast for the middle of next week is looking favorable at the moment. I also saw a chance of an atmospheric river system coming in by Monday with warmer temps and high snow levels. We'll see how that plays out.

Thanks for reading. My next forecast will be on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
